Whether you need to clean your home regularly, or you just need to get things tidied up before you have guests arriving, you can always find new ways to make things more efficient and easier. Some of those ways may include far less work than expected, despite not using commercial cleaners.
The following tips will give you a chance to get things done by saving money and time:
One of the important factors in cleaning your home is to ensure you have clean tools as well. Cleaning a home with dirty sponges is not very practical, so ensuring they are sterile is a great way to make a big first step.
To make that happen, pop your cloth or wet sponge in a microwave for about 30 seconds. This will essentially cook the bacteria on it. You should wait a couple of minutes before pulling it out of there, as it will be scorching hot. If you don’t have a microwave on hand, you can also put them in your washing machine, alongside the sponges of your dishwasher, but this will take longer. Cleaning the sponges and cloths regularly helps prevent the buildup of bacteria inside them. Depending on the frequency of use, you should replace the sponges often enough as well.
Using a cloth to clean your mirrors and glass may leave streaks behind, lint, smudges and so forth. Since newspaper has soft fibres that make it non-abrasive, that makes it ideal for cleaning glass. It’s something available in most homes. If you’re looking to save money and meanwhile switch to less toxic cleaning methods, vinegar is an excellent way of cleaning as an alternative to the more expensive window cleaners. It is also less harmful to the environment, as the newspaper can still be recycled after use. Take an empty spray bottle, fill it up with a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar. Shake it up and spray on the mirror or glass surface, then simply wipe the surface with newspaper.
Denture cleaning tabs are one surprisingly useful cleaning product, especially when it comes to cleaning hard to reach places. Their effervescent and antibacterial properties make denture tabs soaked in water a great tool for cleaning and scrubbing from such places. Couple that with a toothbrush for stains in places where hands can’t reach. Fill up your teapot or coffee pot with water, drop one or two of the denture tabs, depending on the size of the pot. Let the denture tabs dissolve, then empty the pot and rinse it well with water. This approach may also be used for stained coffee mugs or other ceramics and metal items.
The best kind of home cleaning is the one that requires the least amount of work. Using vinegar and a plastic bag can help remove the grime, limescale and unwanted buildup on your shower head. You won’t have to remove the showerhead or faucet handles with that approach. Just get a sandwich bag and fill it up with vinegar and baking soda. Put the showerhead or the faucet handle inside the bag, making sure they’re completely inside the liquid. Close the bag with a rubber band, then wait for about two hours to take them out. Turn on the shower or faucet and let the water rinse them through. Once that’s done you will be free to use them again, clean as new.
