Home cleaning is an important task that should not be ignored. Why is it common to clean the place and completely forget that purifying the air indoors is also essential? After all, you breathe the same air that is subject to all sorts of impurities, so it only makes sense to take adequate steps to improve its quality.
Surprisingly, there are quite a lot of things you can do in that regard. Some of them are pretty obvious, while others require some investment and effort. One thing is for sure though: it is all worth it, since improving the air quality at home leads to better health.
Here is what you need to do:
Open the window – this one is a no-brainer. It is the most obvious thing you can do regarding bettering indoor air. Even if it is just for a few minutes, it will significantly reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide and other harmful chemicals that are a result of human activity. The quality of indoor air is typically inferior to the air outdoors, so opening the window whenever you can is a necessary step. Be particularly cautious when you paint or bring in pressed-wood furniture.
Do not smoke – this is also an obvious tip that you should follow. Never smoke inside your home, as the vapours can build up quite a lot of harmful toxins. Exhaling the smoke from a cigarette releases more than 4000 different chemicals. Now, it would be best if you recognise this and stop smoking altogether. If not, then at the very least you should take it outside. Secondhand smoke is just as dangerous, and there is not any risk-free level of exposure to that. Whether it is you or some visitor in your home – smoke outside and never in your house.
Clean your home on a regular basis – staying on top of your home cleaning chores is also a must when it comes to improving indoor air quality. Dust traps allergens and other nasty particles that can severely reduce the quality of breathable air in your home. Vacuuming and mopping once a week is ideal, and if you cannot invest the time and effort, you can always enlist a cleaning company to help you out.
Maintain healthy humidity levels – high levels of humidity contribute to mould growth, which can be very dangerous. Some moulds produce mycotoxins and allergens, which can trigger various undesired health conditions. It is wise to measure humidity and efficiently control the levels with the aid of a dehumidifier. It is also best to employ preventive measures: opening up the window when cooking, running the exhaust fan in the bathroom and leaving the door there open so moisture can escape, fixing any leaks you see, etc.
Place some plants – plants not only make the place more lively and pleasant, but they also purify the air. Some plants are particularly effective at removing toxic agents like formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. Some examples of such facilities include Peace Lily, English Ivy, Variegated snake plant or Florist’s Chrysanthemum.
None of these tips requires that much effort to implement in your daily routine. On the other hand, they can all make quite an impact on the quality of the air you breathe in your home every single day.
